The five most common fields of study for undergraduates are business, health professions, social sciences and history, education, and English language and literature. Of these fields of study, the top three expected to have the most growth from 2016 to 2021 are nursing at 19%, engineering technologies at 13%, and biological sciences at 12%.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, America’s workforce will add nearly 21 million jobs between 2016 and 2026, accounting for 11% of job growth in the country. However, not all industries will show equal contributions to this growth.

The need for healthcare professionals to support an aging baby boomer generation is often cited as the most important factor in job growth over these 10 years, where jobs in healthcare are expected to make up nearly a quarter of all new jobs created.

What about technology For undergraduates? In an article from Fast Company, author Mark Wilson notes that some form of “computer literacy” will be increasingly important for future workers who want to stay competitive in the job market.

However, it’s important to understand that this does not simply mean learning how to use a computer or learning how to code, but rather knowing how technology can be used as an effective problem-solving tool for solving business problems.
